Rajya Sabha MP D Kupendra Reddy has challenged the National Green Tribunal order to reject his petition on controlling treated water flow from the city lakes into the Dakshina Pinakini river in neighbouring Tamil Nadu.

Hearing his plea on Wednesday, a Supreme Court bench of Chief Justice S A Bobde and Justices B R Gavai and Surya Kant issued notices to Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and the civic bodies concerned seeking their response.

The 50th TTD Board came into existence on Monday with the swearing-in of 26 members as its trustees.

At a brief ceremony organised at Garudalwar sannidhi in front of the main deity inside the sanctum sanctorum, the members took oath during the designated muhurtham between 9.00 a.m. and 10.30 am.

TTD Executive Officer Anilkumar Singhal administered them the oath of office.

BENGALURU: Efforts to revive the city’s polluted lakes may get a booster dose if a proposal to launch cage farming in the cleaned up waterbodies gets the Centre’s nod. D Kupendra Reddy, Rajya Sabha member from Janata Dal (Secular), who is waging a legal battle for revitalisation of foaming waterbodies like Bellandur Lake Varthur Lake , has urged the Union ministry for agriculture and farmers welfare to include the city’s lakes in the Centre’s ambitious project of cage culture. Under the project, fish  are reared in net cages installed in water bodies in such a way that there is free flow of water.

The High Court of Karnataka told the state government on Friday to prepare a revised and comprehensive action plan to clean up the Bellandur Lake in eight weeks.A division bench headed by Justice H G Ramesh, which summoned bureaucrats in-charge of the lake’s maintenance, asked the authority to present the plan before the court. State Urban Development Secretary Mahendra Jain and Bangalore Development Authority Commissioner Rakesh Singh appeared in the court on behalf of the government.

The National Green Tribunal on Thursday gave three months to Karnataka to identify and punish errant officials who failed to check pollution in Bellanduru, Varthur and Agara lakes. The NGT, which passed an order to restore the major lakes, asked the agencies trusted with the upkeep of the lakes to identify the errant officials and take action. The order also said their lapses should be recorded in their annual confidential reports. The order applies to both present and past officials, the tribunal added, observing that the concerned officials have miserably failed to discharge their obligations to the society.

Wondering why the State government could not use foreign technology and expertise to clean the polluted Bellandur lake when the same were used for a small aspect such as designing Indira canteens, the High Court of Karnataka on Friday asked the Commissioner of the Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) to submit within eight weeks a revised action plan for rejuvenation of the lake.A division bench comprising Justice H.G. Ramesh and Justice Mohammad Nawaz issued the direction to the BDA commissioner, who is heading the monitoring committee on Bellandur lake while asking to hold talks with all the public authorities and the stakeholders involved in the rejuvenation process.

Questioning why the State government is not able to find a solution to clean the polluted Bellandur lake, the Karnataka High Court on Thursday directed a senior officer of the State, who can speak on behalf of all the departments and agencies of the State involved in cleaning the lake, to personally be present in the court on Friday.A division bench comprising Justice H.G. Ramesh and Justice Mohammad Nawaz issued an oral direction in this regard while hearing a petition filed by Rajya Sabha member D. Kupendra Reddy. The petitioner had sought the court’s directions to authorities to clean the lake and take measures to prevent the lake from being polluted.

BENGALURU: A committee of resident welfare associations, experts, industry representatives, bureaucrats, MLAs and MPs under the umbrella of ‘Mahadevapura Task Force’ (MTF) was launched by MLA Arvind Limbavali, MP PC Mohan, MP Kupendra Reddy and Urbanist R K Misra on Saturday, at New Horizon Engineering College.“The MTF will follow up with higher officials to clear and execute various developmenta; projects. There are seven sub-committees created pertaining to issues including traffic and major roads, environment, infrastructure, security, law and order, ward amenities, social empowerment and public private partnerships,” said MLA of the constituency, Arvind Limbavali.

BENGALURU: In a move that is set to come as a huge relief to the residents of Karmelaram as well as motorists travelling to Sarjapur and Gunjur, the work to widen the road at the railway level crossing gate on Karmelaram Main Road commenced on Saturday morning.P C Mohan, MP for Bengaluru Central and Aravind Limbavalli, MLA for Mahadevapura, laid the foundation stone during the groundbreaking ceremony held within the station premises. An average of 1,29,000 vehicles pass through LC gate No. 132, located at Karmelaram on the Bengaluru-Salem main railway line.

Former prime minister H D Deve Gowda paid tribute to Basaveshwara at an event here, saying the 12th century Kannada social reformer fought for eradication of caste discrimination which still prevails in India. Kagyu Nalanda yesterday announced the 2016 annual exam results of Theoretical and Spiritual Education. The students were tested on their practical knowledge of self-sustainability for the benefit of society. Underlining the role of everyone in saving our earth and environment, Reddy said that it was important that urgent measures are taken to save our green cover from further destruction.
